Abstract
Forty-eight secondary schools were randomised to a low-stakes retrieval practice routine or business-as-usual teaching over one academic year. Pupils in the intervention arm gained 0.19 SD on a standardised science assessment, with effects roughly twice as large among pupils eligible for free school meals.
